This marked Sullivan’s first trip to China as national security advisor, highlighting the significance of the discussions between the two nations. The last official trip to China by a U.S. president’s national security advisor was in 2016 under the Obama administration.
President Joe Biden is scheduled to have a phone conversation with President Xi Jinping in the “coming weeks,” indicating a potential opportunity for dialogue between the leaders of the two countries. The White House’s announcement of the upcoming call suggests a willingness to engage in diplomatic discussions despite existing challenges.
