Luxury fashion house Dolce and Gabbana recently launched a perfume for dogs, priced at over $100, sparking concerns from animal welfare organizations. The fragrance, named Fefé after the pet dog of brand-owner Domenico Dolce, boasts a blend of “fresh and delicate notes of Ylang Ylang, Musk, and Sandalwood” and comes in a lavish green lacquered glass bottle with a 24-carat gold-plated paw embellishment.

While Dolce and Gabbana claims the perfume has been certified as safe for animal use by the Safe Pet Cosmetics program, experts and organizations like Britain’s RSPCA have raised red flags regarding the potential harm it may cause. RSPCA Senior Scientific Officer Alice Potter cautioned against anthropomorphizing dogs and emphasized the importance of their sense of smell in communication and interaction. Using strong-scented products like perfumes can be overwhelming and even unpleasant for dogs, disrupting their natural environment.

Professor Donald Maurice Broom, an expert in animal welfare at the Cambridge Veterinary School, expressed concerns over the long-term effects of such strong fragrances on dogs. He explained that dogs rely heavily on their sense of smell to navigate their surroundings and interfering with that through overpowering scents can be detrimental to their well-being. While some sweet-smelling oils like lavender can have a calming effect on dogs in small doses, the use of intense perfumes like Fefé may have the opposite effect.

It’s worth noting that not all scented products are harmful to dogs. RSPCA’s Potter mentioned that lightly-scented products that do not interfere with a dog’s sense of smell can actually have a calming effect. The key is to ensure that any fragrance used around pets is subtle and non-intrusive to avoid causing stress or discomfort.

While luxury perfumes for dogs may seem like a glamorous indulgence, it’s important to consider the potential impact on our furry companions. Rather than masking their natural scent with expensive fragrances, pet owners should prioritize the well-being and comfort of their dogs by opting for gentle, pet-friendly products that respect their sensory needs.
