Toyota Motor recently announced the unveiling of the new 2025 4Runner SUV, marking the first redesign of this model in nearly 15 years. This update completes the recent redesign of the automaker’s trucks and SUVs lineup. The new 4Runner features a refreshed look, reminiscent of the recently redesigned Toyota Tacoma pickup, and comes with a range of new offerings, including a hybrid engine and two high-end trims — “Platinum” and “Trailhunter”.
Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager, expressed his excitement about the all-new 4Runner, emphasizing its incredible versatility and capability. He highlighted the significance of this sixth-generation model in expanding Toyota’s truck family, which includes iconic vehicles like the Tacoma, Tundra, Land Cruiser, and Sequoia. The new 4Runner aims to maintain its rugged style and off-road capability while introducing new features to appeal to customers who value adventure and exploration.
The 4Runner is the final member of Toyota’s “five brothers,” which consist of the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks, along with the Land Cruiser and Sequoia SUVs. The 2025 4Runner will be built on Toyota’s global truck platform, previously introduced with the Land Cruiser and Tundra models in 2021. While the pricing for the new 4Runner has not been disclosed yet, the starting prices for the 2024 model range from approximately $41,000 to over $55,000.
Toyota, well-known for its fuel-efficient vehicles like the Prius, has made significant strides in improving the fuel efficiency of its larger SUVs. Prior to the redesign, vehicles such as the 4Runner had lower fuel ratings, averaging around 17 mpg combined. The forthcoming 2025 model is expected to have improved fuel efficiency, aligning with Toyota’s commitment to sustainable mobility and reduced carbon emissions.
One of the most notable additions to the 2025 4Runner is the availability of a hybrid engine variant. The hybrid model features a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine paired with a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into an eight-speed transmission, delivering up to 326 horsepower and 465 foot-pounds of torque. In addition to the hybrid option, the 4Runner will be offered in nine different models, catering to various preferences and needs of customers. The Trailhunter model focuses on off-road capabilities, while the Platinum trim offers luxury and convenience features.
Production of the 2025 4Runner is in progress at Toyota’s Tahara plant in Japan, showcasing the company’s global manufacturing capabilities. With the introduction of the new 4Runner, Toyota continues to evaluate and enhance its lineup of trucks and SUVs, exploring options like hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric models to meet the evolving demands of the automotive market. Jack Hollis, executive vice president of Toyota Motor North America, emphasized the importance of balancing the product mix to achieve optimal fuel efficiency and sustainability goals.
