The job market may appear robust on paper, with data showing that U.S. employers added 2.7 million people to their payrolls in 2023 and unemployment hitting a 54-year low at 3.4% in January. Burnout among job seekers is also a growing concern, with more than half (55%) of unemployed adults reporting feeling burned out from their job search. This feeling is particularly prevalent among younger generations, with 66% expressing burnout due to the challenges of finding employment.

Experts attribute the difficulties faced by job seekers to several factors, including a cooling labor market. According to Peter Cappelli, a management professor at the University of Pennsylvania, there is “less of a frenzy on the part of employers” compared to previous years. This decreased demand has resulted in fewer job opportunities and increased competition among candidates.

Another reason for the disconnect between the perceived strength of the job market and the struggles faced by job seekers may be due to unrealistic expectations. As lead economist Daniel Zhao from Glassdoor suggests, individuals’ perceptions of the job market are influenced by their recent experiences. In the past, there were labor shortages, prompting employers to offer enticing perks and benefits. However, the current market conditions have shifted, making it more challenging to secure desirable positions.
